The project, which will be developed between Italy and Greece, aims to create a pathway for social and economic integration for women in disadvantaged situations, through targeted training in the field of audiovisual subtitling. The main aim is to provide participants with key skills that enable their personal growth while also promoting cultural diversity and inclusion.
“SUPER-TITLE: Unlocking the superpower of women subtitling films for social inclusion” [Grant agreement n. 2025-1-IT02-KA210-ADU-000354645] is a project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Small Scale Partnership programme in the field of adult education. The project is carried out by CinematograFica in partnership with SudTitles and ReFOCUS Media Labs.
Objectives
In today’s increasingly digital and interconnected world, marginalized groups, particularly women from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds and migrant women, face significant barriers to education, employment and social inclusion.
This project addresses critical challenges:
- How can we empower these women with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market?
- How can we ensure their inclusion in societal and cultural narratives?
- How can we bridge the gap between their potential and the opportunities available to them?
Target
The project targets a specific segment of women facing significant socio-economic barriers that limit their access to stable employment, professional development, and social inclusion:
Italian and Greek women
From disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds (such as those who are unemployed, living with low income, living in regions with limited economic opportunities or in precarious situations). These women may be isolated from mainstream economic activities and professional networks which limits their access to opportunities for skill development.
First-generation migrant and/or refugee women who speak Farsi
This group includes primarily Afghans and Iranians migrated to Italy or Greece who fled their countries due to women human rights violations happening in their country, as well as because of security threats, socio-economic constraints and discrimination that prevent them from achieving economic independence. On the one hand, cultural adaptation and systemic discrimination bring social isolation and lack of integration into their local community. On the other hand, their migrant status and language barrier may limit their employment opportunities relegating them to low-paying or informal jobs that do not match their qualifications or skills.
Activities
Create an upskilling pathway by developing 15 blended webinars targeting Italian and Greek women from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds and Farsi-speaking migrant women. The high-quality training combines theoretical and practical components enhancing technical skills and digital literacy.
Enhance inclusion and diversity by empowering women in a situation of socio-economic disadvantage to actively participate in the cultural and media sectors.
This will be achieved by focusing on European audiovisual products that tackle themes such as gender equality, human rights and social integration, thus contributing to the dissemination of minority products that value diverse perspectives and narratives, making them available to a wider audience. Besides, subtitling for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) communities, promotes inclusivity ensuring diverse cultural narratives are accessible to all, including those with disabilities.

CinematograFica is a project founded in 2020 by Claudia Morini di Tocco, Daniela Colamartini, Simona Castoldi. Since its birth it has been using cinema to raise interest about feminisms and gender issues.
In 2022, CinematograFica imagined Mai Mute festival that took place in his two first editions in Florence. Mai Mute involved experts, activists and film professionals. All the films selected for project activities are international independent works directed by women, lgbtqia+, queer and marginalized filmmakers, with the aim to promote a diverse and inclusive gaze in cinema to build new imaginaries.
CinematograFica collaborates with several Italian festivals, curating book presentations, film selection, and panels on the film industry – among them Florence Queer Festival, Sicilia Queer Filmfest, Sentiero Film Festival, Entre dos Mundos, Porretta Film Festival, Cinevasioni. In our network there are also international realities, such as the Karama HRFF in Jordan, Porto Femme in Portugal.
In November 2025, in collaboration with the Municipality of Cesena, Cinematografica organized “Che genere di Europa? Sguardi di cittadinanza plurale” a three-day festival featuring screenings, school activities, and workshops aimed at reflecting on European citizenship from a transfeminist perspective.
Thanks to the consistent work on film selection and relationships with theaters and festivals, Cinematografica also works often with emerging Italian women filmmakers in the national distribution.
CinematograFica’s core activities also include education and training projects. Starting from 2022, CinematograFica has been traveling to Italian schools with Educatə, an educational project of cinema and feminism, involving students aged 6 to 19, funded by “Ministry of Culture” e “Ministry of Education”.
CinematograFica also provides training for adults and at the university level. In 2025, we delivered two training programs at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Florence and Milan and at the University of Florence within the Gender Pedagogy course.

At ReFOCUS , our mission is to empower asylum seekers and refugees by equipping them with filmmaking and modern media skills to overcome the challenges they face, such as limited access to education, language barriers, financial constraints, and mental health issues resulting from years of displacement. Through our three media labs, we provide comprehensive education in photography, filmmaking, audio engineering, and graphic design. Moreover, we actively collaborate with our students in the production of impactful movies and documentaries.
We have been operating four Media Labs located in Lesvos and Athens (Greece), as well as Krakow (Poland) and Berlin (Germany). In Greece, we primarily work with minors and young adults, while in Poland, our focus groups are women and young adults.
Our program aims to break the cycle of disadvantage that refugees and asylum seekers encounter in the labor market. By providing a platform for our students to showcase their original work and share their stories, we empower them to become skilled professionals within the global media industry. Since our establishment in 2017, we have successfully certified hundreds of media students and produced multiple internationally recognized movies that have been showcased at prestigious film festivals worldwide, including the Movies that Matter and World International Film Festival in the Netherlands, the Human Rights Film Festival in Berlin, the Melbourne International Film Festival, and the New Delhi International Film Festival in India. Furthermore, ReFOCUS has garnered media coverage from major networks such as the BBC, National Geographic, The Guardian and Al Jazeera.

Since 2011, the Palermo-based agency, SudTitles SudTitles has been active both regionally and nationally in promoting film culture and making films available in their original versions with subtitles. In addition to organizing film screenings and festivals, SudTitles has collaborated with numerous entities to create subtitles in various languages for a wide range of film festivals, including the Sicilia Queer filmfest in Palermo, Festival dei Popoli in Florence, Taormina Film Fest, Seeyousound in Turin, and the Apriti Cinema series at the Uffizi in Florence. The agency has also worked with foreign cultural institutes such as the Goethe-Institut in Rome and Palermo, the Institut Français Italia and Palermo, and the Instituto Cervantes in Palermo, as well as with production companies, distributors, and institutions like RAI. Additionally, we are continuously involved in training new translators and subtitlers, teaching courses in Theory and Techniques of Audiovisual Translation and Subtitling for universities and institutions, such as the Cineteca di Bologna, and we have been collaborating with the University of Palermo to offer teaching and internships.
In 2021, the agency restructured its legal framework and began redefining its mission. It expanded its range of services and invested in the necessary technology to provide accessibility services, including subtitles for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing and audio description for the blind and partially sighted.
Multiplier Events
We plan to host one Multiplier Event in Greece and one in Italy, aimed not only at showcasing project outcomes but also fostering dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders. ME will create networking opportunities between participants and important players in the film industry.
